Children's center in San Dimas going green with solar power project



A San Dimas organization that provides services to children and families in need is going off the grid - the electrical grid, that is.



The McKinley Children's Center is in the process of building three solar arrays, consisting of 31 solar panels, on its campus on Cypress Avenue.



The groundbreaking ceremony for the project will be today.

Unlike many solar panels that are stationary, the panels at McKinley will be motorized and track the path of the sun, increasing their efficiency by as much as 30 percent.

To do that, Mason said the center is looking at other renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and basic conservation measures designed to cut power usage.



Officials have also begun other projects designed to cut the center's water and natural gas usage. Mason said the center's swimming pool has been outfitted with a "bladder" that captures water splashed out of the pool. The water is then dechlorinated and used to water a small park area on the campus.



They are also replacing all of the center's old and leaky natural gas lines and replacing the gas-powered appliances with more-efficient ones.

But innovation doesn't necessarily go hand-in-hand with aesthetics, and McKinley officials had to convince neighbors that the solar arrays wouldn't be unsightly.

In response to those concerns, the center altered its plans slightly and agreed to plant trees that will hide the panels from view.

Courthouse reopens after mold removal



The District Court building in Mound City reopened Monday after being closed for two weeks after workers found black mold in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.



Sixth District Chief Judge Richard Smith said that about four weeks ago, a black growth was noticed on the air conditioning vent in the west end of the building.



Smith said at first it was ignored but then it started to grow out of the vent. The judge said he talked with County Clerk David Lamb about having the building checked for mold.



D & R Insulation’s certified mold inspectors'test showed that it was black mold and that only the west air conditioning system of the five in the building was affected.



D & R inspectors said they could clean up everything except the HVAC system for $975, Smith reported. They took out ceiling tiles and cleaned there.



"The ceiling tiles have been left out so that we can make sure that the mold is not coming back," Smith said. He added it was urgent that the HVAC be cleaned immediately and there was no time to get a bid.



Midwest Duct Cleaning, Merriam, was hired after Smith had researched several companie for an approximate cost of $9,000. Midwest Duct Cleaning’s inspectors found positive results for the black mold in multiple vents in the building, not just the system on the west end.



The mold spores apparently were picked up by the other HVAC units in the building, Smith said.

Arizona man describes shears impaling eye



PHOENIX (AP) - An 86-year-old Arizona man had just finished trimming plants in his backyard when he fell face-first into his pruning shears, sending one of the handles through his right eye socket and halfway into his head.



Unsure what had happened, Leroy Luetscher reached up and felt the shears jutting from his face. He was covered in blood and in more pain than he'd ever felt in his life.



"I didn't know if my eyeball was still there or what," Luetscher told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "The pain was so bad that I guess I wasn't afraid to die."



Luetscher managed to put his T-shirt over the wound to stanch the bleeding. He said the excruciating pain is what kept him conscious and able to walk to the laundry room of his house to beckon his longtime live-in girlfriend, who called 911.



Luetscher, a Wisconsin native who now lives in southern Arizona's Green Valley, has made a remarkable recovery since the July 30 accident. He still has slight swelling in his eyelids and minor double vision, but is otherwise OK.



Doctors who removed the shears and rebuilt a bone in Luetscher's eye socket say it could have been much worse.



"He's was very lucky that it missed all vital structures and we were basically able to put him back together," Dr. Lynn Polonski said.



After Luetscher's girlfriend, Arpy Williams, called 911, an ambulance rushed him to University Medical Center in Tucson,Do not use cleaners with high risk merchant account , steel wool or thinners. where a team of surgeons took scans of his brain and came up with a plan to treat him.



They learned the shears' handle had gone 6 inches into Luetscher's head and was resting against the carotid artery in his neck.
